This question is more for those of you who have already come out to family members...like brothers, sister, and parents...

I'm wondering...when did you come out to your family? Did you come out to them before or after friends? Did you tell them all at once or one at a time? Who did you find the most/least support from? Did you tell them before you had "someone" in your life to tell them about, or wait until there was someone to come out for? For those who waited until there was someone, did you wish in retrospect that you had told them before there was someone?

Thanks everyone!

shy

Good question Shy and one for thought.

In my own experience I came out to my mom when I was getting ready to move in with my partner Chris. Until then I had never lived with anyone in a partner-like relationship and so never felt it necessary to tell. When Chris and I got serious I decided to tell my Mom the truth.

My Mom accepted it well. She really did. For a 78 year old Conservative Christian lady who raised me in the Church she just simply said, "well it's not my first choice for your life" and then went on to tell me how some things in life are not what we choose but what we have to accept.

I never told my brother John (who passed away in dec) and haven't told my other brother who I don't have much contact with. My mom is very supportive and loves Chris.

I have told a few close friends but am closed about it at work because I work for a Christian Organization.

So that's my experience. I think we all have a story to tell and I'm interested in hearing from others.

Did your family say how they knew? I've read quite a few threads where people have come out, and their friends already knew or had guessed. Do we send out signals that we are unaware of?!! Big Grin

Shy - Thank you for the great question!
