AS I SAT HERE THINKING

AS I SAT HERE THINKING,
I ASKED GOD FOR SOME WORDS.
I SAID SPEAK THROUGH THIS POEM,
TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T HEARD.

IF SOMEONE HERE IS SUFFERING,
AND YOU CAN'T FEEL HIS PEACE.
THEN LET HIS SPIRIT MINISTER,
HE'LL GIVE YOU SUCH RELEASE.

THERE'S SOMEONE HERE HE'S SPEAKING TO,
YOU ASKED TO HEAR HIS VOICE.
I'M TALKING RIGHT TO YOU MY CHILD,
BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR CHOICE.

YOU WONDER IF I SEE YOU,
AND CARE ABOUT YOUR LIFE,
SOMETIMES YOU THINK THAT YOU'RE NOT SEEN,
I HAVE SEEN ALL YOUR STRIFE.

I'M WAITING FOR YOU PATIENTLY,
TO CALL ON ME RIGHT NOW.
AND IF YOU KEEP YOUR EYES ON ME,
THEN I WILL SHOW YOU HOW.

TO FIND THAT PEACE YOUR LOOKING FOR,
YOU'VE STRUGGLED FOR SO LONG.
BUT I WOULD LIFT THAT WEIGHT FROM YOU,
REPLACE IT WITH A SONG.

THIS ISN'T JUST A POEM,
I'M SPEAKING TO YOUR HEART.
AND IF MY CHILD YOU LISTEN,
YOU'LL GET A BRAND NEW START.

MY LOVE FOR YOU IS DEEPER,
THAN ANYTHING YOU KNOW.
AND WHEN YOU COME BACK HOME TO ME,
THAT LOVE WILL HELP YOU GROW.

STAY CLOSE TO ME, DON'T RUN AWAY,
SOMETIMES YOUR FULL OF FEAR.
BUT IF YOU LISTEN TO MY VOICE,
THEN I WILL DRAW YOU NEAR.

I PROMISED I WOULD STAY WITH YOU,
I'LL NEVER LEAVE YOUR SIDE.
MY FAITHFULLNESS WILL NEVER FAIL,
I'VE CHOSEN YOU MY BRIDE.

SO LET THESE WORDS THEN TOUCH YOUR HEART,
AND HEAL ALL YOUR PAIN.
AND I WILL MAKE A CHANGE IN YOU,
I'LL BRING THAT LATTER RAIN.

GOD HEARS YOU EVEN NOW,
ROSE Razz

A favorite of mine — by the author, a deep Christian, of "Jane Eyre":
Charlotte Brontë

'Tis not the air I wished to play,
The strain I wished to sing;
My willful spirit slipped away
And struck another string.
I neither wanted smile nor tear,
Bright joy nor bitter woe,
But just a song that sweet and clear,
Though haply sad, might flow.

A quiet song, to solace me
When sleep refused to come;
A strain to chase despondency,
When sorrowful for home.
In vain I try; I cannot sing;
All feels so cold and dead;
No wild distress, no gushing spring
Of tears in anguish shed;

But all the impatient gloom of one
Who waits a distant day,
When, some great task of suffering done,
Repose shall toil repay.
For youth departs, and pleasure flies,
And life consumes away,
And youth's rejoicing ardour dies
Beneath this drear delay;

And Patience, weary with her yoke,
Is yielding to despair,
And Health's elastic spring is broke
Beneath the strain of care.
Life will be gone ere I have lived;
Where now is Life's first prime?
I've worked and studied, longed and grieved,
Through all that rosy time.

To toil, to think, to long, to grieve —
Is such my future fate?
The morn was dreary, must the eve
Be also desolate?
Well, such a life at least makes Death
A welcome, wished-for friend;
Then, aid me, Reason, Patience, Faith,
To endure to the end!

— Charlotte Brontë

Excellent Sparrow, Wink
I Love the older poetry, of Charlotte and Emily Bronte. Adelaide Procter is someone you really might enjoy also, if you're not already familar with her. Thanks for sharing that.

Rose, I couldn't have written a better biography of my own life if I had to than this one by Charlotte Bronte. I sense she and I would have had some good talks. . .

So very true, Rose. It's like a quotation about history that a professor of mine used to repeat:
"All we know about history are the parts that got written down."

(By the way, Sweet Rose — I do indeed feel His peace. Thank you.)

Sparrow,
Here's a poem by my favorite woman poet. If you haven't read her yet, she's dynamite. I have her authors edition, 1857, with a forward by Charles ****ens. LOL. I guess I can't say ****ens!!! LOL!!!

CLEANSING FIRES

Let thy Gold be cast in the furnace,
Thy red Gold, Precious and Bright;
Do not fear the hungry fire,
With it's caverns of burning light;

And thy Gold shall return more Precious,
Free from every spot and stain;
For Gold must be tried by fire,
As a Heart must be tried by pain.

In the cruel fire of sorrow
Cast thy Heart, do not faint or wail;
Let thy hand be firm and steady,
Do not let thy Spirit quail;

But wait till the trial is over,
And take thy Heart again;
For as Gold is tried by fire,
So a Heart must be tried by pain!

I shall know by the gleam and glitter
Of the Golden chain you wear,
By your Heart's calm strength in Loving,
Of the fire they have had to bear.

Beat on, true Heart, Forever;
Shine Bright, Strong Golden Chain;
And Bless the cleansing fire,
And the furnace of Living pain!

Oh, Sweet Rose!!!
I LOVE THIS!!!!

I have heard of this poetess, but I haven't been familiar with her poetry. I'm going to find some more of her work on the Web.

Thank you SO MUCH for this lovely treasure!!!

And now, as promised, a favorite of mine by Emily ****inson:

I shall know why when time is over,
And I have ceased to wonder why —
Christ will explain each separate anguish
In that fair schoolroom in the sky.

He will tell me what Peter promised —
And I, for wonder at his woe,
Will forget the little drop of anguish
That scalds me now, that scalds me now.

Thank you for your encouragement, dear friend, and your prayers. If my dreams ever DO come true, you will be the second to know!! (I'll be the first!!)

Blessing to you, dear Wisconsin lady. . . from an old Ohioan.

Funny that you should mention Poe, Sweet Rose.

"Annabelle Lee" is my very favorite poem ever.

"But we loved with a love that was more than love
I and my Annabelle Lee . . . "

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Thanks for the GOOD poens, Rose and Sparrow.

Now, I think it's time to post some poems by Kahlil Gibran.

Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet : On Love
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:

When love beckons to you follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you believe in him,

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.

He threshes you to make you naked.

He sifts you to free you from your husks.

He grinds you to whiteness.

He kneads you until you are pliant;

And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;

For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."

And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Wow Metalheart,
That was awesome!!! I have never read Kahil's works before. It is a good description of what Love really is. When we have the kind of Love that Jesus is, we will be able to hold nothing back. Nothing is too much to give, like Jesus gave all for us. That is Real Love. That Love only comes from God, for God is Love.

Song of Solomon 8
6 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.
7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

Romans 15:30

30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the Love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;

Psalm 126
5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
