Anyone else out there hooked on The L Word (TLW)?

My favorite characters are Bette and Tina. I love all the girls on the show (except maybe Jenny!!) but it's Bette and Tina that really involve me. Why? Well, my partner and I have been together for over 3 years and well, we live in the south and we don't have a community of friends...very few and certainly do not have any role models at all.

Bette and Tina have a loving relationship (mostly...they are going through some stuff, I know) and they have been together for 7 years and still are very much in love with each other. I'm not saying they're perfect, but I just love their loving relationship on the show and despite all the angst that might follow (to create drama on the show), I will always remember the loving relationship Bette and Tina have.

Watching B/T have really solidified my relationship with my partner and I believe it is making it stronger....all because I am seeing how a loving couple can be. We need role models in our community and for me, it has really helped to have B/T's interactions help me understand some of the struggles we face as couples.

Would love to discuss B/T with anyone...or TLW! Personally I'm very distressed that there are rumors that TPTB have written into the script for Bette to cheat! But those are just rumors.

Enigma,

I have been watching the show too. I thought it got off to a pretty good start but it seems to be going downhill in the last few episodes. The mini-relationship between Marina and Jenny really deteriorated into something ugly. Nothing that it started out right to begin with since Jenny was already in a committed relationship. And Shane seems pretty empty to me - maybe she has appeal with the twenty-somethings. I think the most interesting and sympathetic character so far is the blonde bi-sexual. She is witty, slightly sarcastic, somewhat cynical and yet still vulnerable. Bette and Tina are good characters too but they seem to looking for an answer to a lull in their relationship (i.e. a baby). The tennis player character is a hoot. I love her lack of gaydar and the others explanations of what to look for in style and apparel. Just my impressions so far.

Well, I agree. The first couple of episodes I thought were very good. But the last two weeks seem to be full of swearing and now drug use. I don't mind those things if they fit into the story, but I hate it when it is swearing just to be swearing. Bette and Tina are interesting. Very complex characters. Alice (the bisexual blonde) is fairly realistic. Dana, the tennis player, I like because she is trying to not let the world know she is gay!!

If they would cut off the swearing every other word, I would be much happier.

Also, does anyone else have trouble seeing what is happening because the filming is so dark?

Glad to see that there are other LWord fans out there.

Texagal, I have to agree that the last few episodes have not been as good as the pilot etc. I definitely am not into the whole Jenny and Marina thing. I just don't think it was right of Marina to get involved with Jenny...attraction or not....Jenny was spoken for. I agree that Lisa is really fun. So far she has been probably the most "stable" one. I love Dana too! I kinda identify with her in that I am still somewhat closeted in my professional life...although I'm not a pro-tennis player.....wish I were!! (I do play tennis though!). I love the "campy" episodes....especially the covert operation to "discern the orientation of a certain Miss Lara Perkins!". That was a hoot!!

Groucho, I haven't noticed that it's too dark. I have that problem with the WB channel locally. Personally I didn't like the last episode at all!!!!!!! I thought too much time was relegated to the stoned-Jenny thing. I just didn't get it.

BTW...just curious...what are your ages? Just wondering. I'm going to be 31 this March. I'm just wondering if there are generational differences when it comes to this show.

Enigma,

Well, I am a decade older than you. Don't know if that makes my perspective any different. I still consider myself young-ish. I came out in the early 80's and probably the biggest difference between you and me is that it wasn't cool back then to be gay. Didn't seem to get hip until the last 10 years or so. But as for the characters in TLW, I relate the most to Lisa. Have also known characters like Shane who, after a few years of that lifestyle of love and leave 'em, wind up leaving town. Not too many women are tolerant of this kind of activity. Of course, maybe with the new generation there is an emerging Don Juanita sect that I am unaware of. Also, I completely agree with you about the campy episodes. That covert operation for Miss Lara Perkins has been the best scene yet. I wish they would do more episodes with plot lines like that.

And happy pre-birthday, Enigma.

Hey Texagal, thanks for the birthday wishes! I appreciate it! I used to think 30's were old, but I've changed my mind! LOL

I don't know if it's generational preferences or just personal preferences.

Personally I'm enjoying the L-Word. I think for the most part it contains some very complex characters. I will continue to watch it. I'm definitely a Bette and Tina fan and will continue to be so, but I do love Alice and Dana and Shane. Marina and Jenny....I dunno. I just can't warm up to those two. This last episode had me just LOL @ Alice. She is way cool....re: the Intervention. The interaction with "Lisa"...hmmm...very interesting is all I have to say.

One thing I'll say, TLW has really given me more of a glimpse into our community. I live in a very closeted area and we don't have many friends, so I guess i'm learning what it's like to be gay? Smile

Okay, I know I'm really really late in joining into this thread...but I've only just discovered The L Word!! *smiles* I've only seen the pilot and the next episode so far...but I have to say...I'm loving this show!!!

Okay, so there could be a tad less nudity, and there could be a tad less swearing, etc... from my Christian point of view...but...oh it's great to see a show like this!!

(If you haven't seen the show and think you might, don't read this next paragraph - it contains a spoiler)

Alright....I was watching the second episode, and I found myself cheering on the characters...and near the end, I even applauded!!! I was sitting there alone in my apartment busting a gut with the whole scene in the tennis club where Dana's friends were trying to to find out if the "soup" (hahahaha!!) chef did or did not "play for our team". That was WAY too funny!! The whole gaydar thing...I could so totally relate to that. I tell Newsong all the time that I have a broken gaydar!! Hahaha!! Anyway....near the end, when the chef came back into the locker room and kissed Dana...and then said "just in case you were still wondering" oh....how I appluaded then!! My dog looked at me like I was nuts....

Anyway.....suffice it to say, that I'm really enjoying this show!! And Dana is truely my favorite character so far. I can so totally relate to her...not to mention that I think she's kinda cute..hahahaha!!

WHOO HOO for The L Word!!!!

*smiles*

I just got the DVD for the first season, and I really like it! I know there are some things in there that I don't agree with and things I would never do. However, I think that this show is revolutionary and it is important that people see we are real people with real problems, and I like the fact that the L word portrays a bit of our reality. I know this show is a drama and things may be over exaggerated for the purpose of TV, but I love this show and I cannot wait for season two. I don't want to spoil the end of the first season for anyone, and maybe I get a little too involved into my shows, but I cannot believe what might become of Tina and Bette's relationshipFrown Does anyone have thoughts on the last episode and their relationship? Anyway, there is my two centsWink

Well, here I am...a couple dollars short and a few days late! Better late than never!

I finished watching season one last week and I HATED the ending. They took the one relationship that was pure and right and destroyed it. The Provacations thing was taken one step too far as well...no need to go that far to prove a point.

Beyond those two things, I loved the show, too. Alice is probably my favourite and I can't wait to see what happens with her and Dana...for those of you who are watching season two now...don't give it away, please! I will have to wait to rent or borrow it!

Just a quick note for the Canadians around here who have been waiting for this show to come on a Canadian channel so they can watch it too.

I discovered last night that The L Word is now playing on Showcase (it apparently started last week, as last night was the second episode...and my favorite of all of them!!)

The L Word airs Thursday nights at 10pm EST. Here's the website for it on Showcase: http://www.showcase.ca/lword/

Also....I just finished watching the entire first season a few days ago....and all I have to say about how the season ended, and the content of the last few episodes is this:

ARG ARG ARG!!!! and....DOUBLE ARG!!

For those of you who have seen it...you know what I mean. For those of you who haven't, but will see it....you'll be echoing me once you've seen it!!

ARG!!

So is anybody watching this season of The "L" Word? My partner and I are but not sure we're really liking it that much.

I guess the biggest question is does it really portry the gay lifestyle or is it that because we're not (Chris and I) too much into the whole gay community? i.e. we live a quiet life, don't go to clubs, prefer a night at home watching a movie over going to the city, etc.

OR....is it our ages (37 and 47) and the show portrays reality for the 20 something crowd.

Love to read your thoughts...

Joan

Joan,
We have already seen Season 2 here in the States. I just wish there was a long term relationship. My partner and I have been together for 7 years and have no intention of not making it a life time commitment. What I see on the L Word is a lot of one night stands.

Don't know if it is true or not. We too, like you live a quite life and are older.

I haven't started watching season two yet...waiting for the DVD to be passed to me!

At the end of season one, I called my friend who lent me the DVDs and told her that I didn't think it protrayed us in a very good light. She told me in no-uncertain terms that this protrayal was very accurate and that I live a very sheltered life.

If that's the case, we christian's have a LOT of work to do within our community!

You guys are so lucky! We only get TLW on satellite or cable and if you don't have those (us) you have to buy the dvd from amazon and watch like crazy! Have seen pretty much all season one so far - the g/f is mad on Bette, personally I'm a Shane fan.
Season two is looking good - I'm waiting on the dvd again!
