They say the Da Vinci Code has sold more copies since the Bible was printed. I never read the book and enjoyed the movie. My partner read the book and didn't care for it that much. He said it was just okay. I was wondering what others thought who have seen the movie or read the book. How, if any, has it impacted your faith or view of the Christian History?

I'm with you, Rev. I watched the movie with my girlfriend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not read the book. My girlfriend did read the book and said that the movie did the book justice.

I think I still have bruises on my arm from when she nearly jumped on my lap during a suprise picture of Shane. The woman on my other side, whom I did not know, bruised my other arm at the same time! lol

When I went to see it, I went with the understanding that it was fictional. With that mindset, it allowed me to just enjoy the ideas and adventure.

Nice thread! Thank you RevClotheshorse! Smile
Here we have another opportunity for continuing in the growing up of our faith.

I must say I didn't read the book but did see the movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

As you know I'm trying to keep my faith as strong as I can, and I'm doing this through prayer, service and my favorite equation: L + K - N = F (Love plus knowledge minus nonsenses is Faith)

Is by this that I can handle those slip-stones that many people cannot. Separate the nonsenses from the right knowledge is as important as the right knowledge itself!

One of this slip-stones is the Christian Church History. And this is an important theme of the movie.

When I started to study that History, I could see quite well how, in the middle of the church (as holy body) was been created an amazing structure of power (economical and political) using the faith (and the manipulation of it) in order to get control of masses for the upper clergy and politicians (as emperor Constantine). When I did separate the two concepts of "church", then my faith was purer (and without that "nonsenses"), and hence, stronger. It was important, because we can see the same phenomenon on today's "churches" (as structures of power, rather holy body). The "equation" functions like a "vaccine" against many nonsenses that are "officialy" stated in matter of faith. So, I could understand that this important issue (my faith) is my (and only mine) own responsibility (without any "magistery" of any "church") and that I could get some help (if I want to) for our Lord and the Holy Spirit. So, the issue is between God and I, without nothing in the middle, but the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, the movie has the virtue to allow people (and christians, mainly) to face what is rock and what is sand in order to set the foundation of faith.

What about if Jesus was married? My faith is built upon what He did for us, not upon his civilian status.

What about if Jesus had children of His own? My faith is built upon His teachings and His spiritual inheritance, not upon His economic inheritance that I should share with His descendents.

What about if the "church" would even murder for keeping his earthly power? My faith is built upon the CHURCH as many membered body, as a Holy Body which is our Lord's; not upon a structure of power that wants to dominate (politically and economically).

What if there was a manipulation of the Bible (i.e. stating the canon)? My faith is bulit upon the God's Word, which is in the Bible, not upon a collection of books, phrases, allocutions, etc. that can be erroneous or inaccurate.

What if the Bible (as a collection of books) had errors? I mean, geographical, mathematical, historical ones, etc. (And it had a lot of them, certainly). My faith is built upon the God's Word as the Most Kind, Lovely and Pure Rule of Life, not upon the ignorance about Palestinian's geography that the author of Mark had; neither upon the ignorance of "Pi" that the architects of the "molten sea" had, nor the incapability of counting that Ezra or the author of Joshua had! (just to tell some of them)

Christians, therefore, have to face today an awsome dilemma: Must we continue in our stubborn attitude in order to sustain what is untenable? Or must we, with the help of the Holy Spirit, depurate our set of beliefs, in order to separate the gold from the straw?

Here it is what I find marvelous of the movie. For me, it fortified my faith, instead of weaked it!

Blessings.

P.S. I pray the Lord this thread doesn't become another raining of brimstone and fire. Wink

I did read the book and saw the movie too, I like it very much, there were some scenes of the movie I didn’t like much, things that doesn’t happen in the book, but I guess they weren’t so bad if you accept the “Hollywood artistic license”

And to answer you question, it didn’t change my belief or my faith, Jesus was an amazing person, and if that is true, and he was married or have kids, it change nothing for me.

After a year or so of deliberately NOT reading the book, cos it seemed like a total pile of pants (or load of rubbish) and I generally rebel against getting swept in a popularist tide with things like that, I finally started the book on Sunday.

Sigh.... in spite of trying not to like it... I am hooked. From what I know of history etc, the content (holy grail/hidden documents etc) is a load of old twaddle, but it is very well written and is keeping me turing the pages.

I'm a culture victim......

Wanderer,

I think you and are "kindred spirits" with respect to the DaVinci code. I've not yet read the book, was resisting it largely for the same reasons you stated. Funny.

The DaVinci code is an interesting theory, a good book, and on OK movie.
My personal opinion: if Yeshua had a wife, good. If He didn’t, good. Doesn’t matter either way.

Dan Brown writes a great novel which is precisely what Da vinci code is I personally preferred Angels and Demons it just didnt get all the hype cause the main story line didnt Involve the Lord Himself!

True, Kimmie. The guy never claimed it was anything but fiction, yet people took it & ran with it, didn't they?
