Hi everyone,
Do you feel that your real personality comes across when you are posting, or are you more, or less extrovert on the boards than in real life? Smile

I think I'm more serious online. You'd have to ask Groucho though. She and hers come over to visit our family on a fairly regular basis. I like to joke around a lot and online doesn't really lend itself to that. That is unless I want to type A LOT! Lol! See you guys later - I have to go clean a house and get ready for my oldest daughters 13th birthday!!! Big Grin

I think the tough thing about online is exactly what Elaine said...it is hard to express emotion. Tone of voice is gone. But Elaine is pretty funny and definitely FUN to be with. Although, I do know that some jokes don't make it over the internet. Had Elaine scared one time when I was being sarcastic!!

I think most people come across pretty much as in real life--maybe not quite as goofy, depending on the thread, but I think extroverts are extroverts whether IRL or online! Right, Rose? (Heh heh)

I agree it's difficult to accurately express who you are online. I worry sometimes that I come off as incredibly corny....or alternately as some sort of know-it-all.

Some, like Shy, are very talented at finding those really cool looking avatars and other thingys (yes, that's the technical term) like the cartoony figures that bounce up and down or dance.

Then, there are those, like me, who get too doggone frustrated figuring that stuff out...and are too proud to come out and ASK for help. (Oops, was that a confession?! Phooey.)

Anyways, neat question, ajay. By the way, if you don't mind my asking, how did you choose ajay to be your screen name?

Well, I've met some of the ladies on these boards and others I have talked to by phone. I think were are who we are on these boards!

Searcher...Thingy? I like it!

What about our online names...how do we pick them? What do they do for us?

My online name is just my name, as I am lucky enough not to be worried about people finding out who I am, unlike some of you in your difficult situations. And I try to be just myself on the boards, too. But if I met any of you face to face you would probably find me more emotional and far more silly than comes across on line.

No, I don't mind you asking. A and J are the initials of my name, but when I signed up -somebody already had A.J. so I just changed it to the phonetic sound - hence ajay! Smile

P.S. I don't know how to put an avatar on either!

Thanks, ajay! That makes perfect sense. And, here I was, thinking you were making reference to some type of bird. Silly me.

Ingrid, I also can be very very silly in person. It's fun. I am getting the feeling that if a lot of us online here got together in "real life", we'd have a great time laughing ourselves silly. Big Grin

I think I tend to be a bit more extrovert on the boards than in real life. It usually takes me a while to get to know people on the boards, but in a situation where you're not face to face and there is no immediate reaction, I think it is easier to be more 'honest' and real on the boards. Type the message and don't worry too much about the reaction!!!
As for my name... guess I was wandering around looking for answers... I think I've found a fair few though so maybe I should change it!!

Reply by ajay - This is what scares me - I think I am more cautious on the boards, because it is difficult to assess what reaction people might have. Things might be taken in the wrong way. However, I feel happier about posting on a Christian site, as I know that if I do say the wrong thing, then people will be forgiving, and give me a chance to explain myself. I hope and pray that others that visit this site have the courage to start posting. This is a really supportive and friendly place to be! Smile

ajay my experience on the boards is that most folks (95%) are very, very patient and loving towards one another. Sure we've had a rare exception here and there but compared to my brief stint over at the WOF (women of faith) board this place is like a slice of heaven! We've had one or two pretty serious discussions but for the most part folks are very carying and understanding towards each other. Even when our differences of faith/beliefs have been extreme at times. I've been very encouraged in my faith by what I've experienced here!

Hey Elaine: I find this to be a most welcoming site. I've had some concerns as I visit WOF where I am Rainbow Bright. I feel so at home and welcome here. I've made some new friends and so far I've seen no dissention and nobody is judgmental. It's comfortable and it feels safe to post. I too hope some of the others will find it a safe place to express themselves, Ajay! I appreciate a place where I can be real and if I can't I wouldn't stick around. Thanks again Elaine for all the hard work and for a "home site" with some great people! Katie

apologies for draggin up this old thread, but it interested me.

i agree that it's easier to be honest online and also more open. but i do worry about how i come across...
... i have a very perculiar English countryside sense of humour, that even my friends over here who have lived their whole lives in towns don't always get. sometimes i worry about being misinterpreted, becasue you guys don't see the grin on my face at the same time as i say something. (i constantly get misinterpreted through text messages for exactly this reason).

this thread also makes me smile becasue it amuses me how people can make impressions of other people quite quickly, without really knowing them. it's a good job you cant hear me talk, people always think i'm posh, when i am infact just a peasant farmer!(ok one who went to a nice girl's school where we weren't allowed to wear trousers due to them being unladylike!, but all the same i'm still a down to earth farmer)

well that's it.

Hey Cellist!

I'm a Devon yokel (so some people say) and certain words I say (like iron) sound really Devon-y when I say them. I grew up in a small seaside town in rural Devon (ooo arr) so I have a certain affinity to country life (and smells!)

The thing I find I have to think about on the boards is my language - I tend to be quite colloquial when I speak to friends, which I have to re-phrase on here cos I guess the Yanks and others wouldn't get them! I have an American friend who's always intruigued by some of the things I come out with - even though her partner is English! Maybe it's just me......
