I had always thought it translated to "carefully," as well. Of course, someone who imbibed the night before & was "feeling gingerly," would be moving carefully, carefully avoiding loud noises or other disruptions....so it's maybe a takeoff on the same thing. Don't know the origins of the word, though. Anybody else?
