Rose,
No, I haven't really thought about the "time", just the fact it was 3 days. I guess the time really hasn't entered my mind. I'm just glad He rose!!! Happy Easter to everyone! Misswings Surviving is important. Thriving is ELEGANT. Maya Angelou |

Ok, here's the paraphrased version of this explanation:
The first explanation is that Jesus was really crucified on Wednesday. Some scholars argue that Wednesday wasn't accounted for, as were all the other days and that the passover wasn't a fixed day (Friday) but floated. The more traditionally accepted explanation is this: Most biblical scholars believe the phrase "three days & three nights" to be a Hebrew figure of speech referring to ANY part of three days & three nights. Not a full 72 hour period.(They use other biblical passages to support this view, such as Psalm 1:2.) According to Matthew 16:21, 17:23, & 20:19 Christ said he would rise again ON the third day. So the phrase "on the third day" can't mean after three days or 72 hours. The phrase "on the third day" or "three days & three nights" must mean WITHIN three days & three nights. Jesus would be "in the earth" as according to Matthew 12:40, on part of Friday, all of Saturday and part of Sunday. Not 72 hours, but part of three consecutive days. This seems more logical, especially when you think about the way Jesus spoke.. always in parables and figuratively. |

Very good Pyro!
I believe it to be the first explanation. When did Jesus really Die? Here is a biblical look at why there appears to be a missing day when really. The Catholic church and then the protestant church have misinterpreted what day of the week Jesus died on. For Jesus to be in the tomb for 3 full days and 3 full nights literally as scriptures declares he had to be crucified Wednesday afternoon and resurrected Sunday Morning. So lets us look at the picture that scripture portrays. PASSION WEEK TIME FRAME NISAN 8, THURSDAY 6 days before Passover Jesus has supper with Lazarus and his family, (John 12:1-11). NISAN 9, FRIDAY 5 days before Passover Jesus' 1st entry into Jerusalem on the back of a colt, (Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-44; John 12:12-19). NISAN 10, SATURDAY 4 days before Passover Selection of the Passover lambs, (Exodus 12:3). Jesus curses fig tree, Jesus' 2nd entry into Jerusalem on the back of and ass and foal, Jesus casts money changers out of the temple, (Matt 21:1-17). NISAN 11, SUNDAY 3 days before Passover, Disciples see fig tree outside city withered up which Jesus cursed, Jesus teaches in Temple all day and refutes his critics, Jesus gives Mount Olivet prophecy eats at Simon the Leper's home, (Matt.21:18-26:5, Mark 11:20-14:2, Luke 20:1-22:2). NISAN 12, MONDAY 2 days before Passover, Jesus tells the disciples to go into city to prepare room for Passover, which would begin in 2 days with the slaying of the lambs. Disciples do so and make ready for Passover; fined room, purchase supplies, de-leaven, etc. Jesus did not go with them he stayed in Bethany, (Matt. 26:6-19; Mark 14:3-16). NISAN 13, TUESDAY 1 day before Passover, Monday night (begins 13th of Nisan) Jesus eats his last meal with his disciples, prays at Garden of Gethsemane, is betrayed by Judas. He is tried before Annas, Caiaphas, at night, which is early 13th. Next AM by Pilate, Herod, and judged by Pilate at NOON, He is given over to Roman soldiers, (Matt.26:20-27:31, Mark 14:17-19, Luke 22:14-23:24, John 13:1-19:15). It is John 19:14 which specifies noon. NISAN 14, WEDNESDAY Passover begins with the sunset NISAN 15, THURSDAY 1st day of Unleavened Bread - Holy Day, Passover meal/seder eaten in evening (still Wed by our time), Christ's first day in the tomb guards are stationed at the tomb, (Matt 27:62-66). NISAN 16, FRIDAY 2nd day if Unleavened Bread, Jesus's second day in the tomb, Women buy and prepared spices, (Mark 16:1, Luke 23:56) NISAN 17, SATURDAY 3rd day of Unleavened day the women rest this is Christ's 3rd night and 3rd day in the tomb Christ is resurrected Sabbath evening before the sunsets and 18th begins fulfilling prophecy of Jonah's being "3 days and 3 nights" in the "heart of the earth" (grave) total of 72 hours, (Matt.12: 40; Matt.28:1; Luke 23:56). NISAN 18, SUNDAY FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK. He has risen women visit the tomb while it is still dark but light is beginning and they discover he is risen, Jesus meets Mary, other women, Jesus meets two disciples on way to Emmaus, He meets all disciples that evening, (Matt 18:2-10; Mark 16:1-14; Luke 24:1-49; John 20:2-201:22). Jesus then goes to heaven after 40 days we add to these 40 days the two days that he was in the grave to bring us to the day that the wave sheaf was offered. We then subtract those 42 days from the counted 49 until Pentecost and we arrive at 7 days. These are the 7 days necessary to anoint someone to be High Priest. Christ is our heavenly High Priest, the earth, the natural is a copy of the heavenly. Remember that the Jewish days begin and end at 6 PM. Jesus was literally in the grave three Hebraic days and three nights no exceptions. Friday to Sunday does not work biblically -- If its Friday that he died on then he rose on Monday which is actually the second day of the week -- according to the Gregorian and greeco-roman calendars which we use. He had to die on Thursday and rise Sunday Morning. THE BIBLICAL TIME LINE OF EVENTS Passover: 1st night Mark 14:12; Matthew 26:17: "And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover Lamb was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?" Before Pilate Matthew 27:11: "Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him..." Mark 15:1: "And early in the morning, the chief priests....led Him away, and delivered Him up to Pilate." Luke 23:1: "Then the whole body of them arose and brought Him before Pilate." Mark 15:15-16: "...Pilate released Barabbas for them and after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified." Luke 23:25: "And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison...but delivered Jesus to their will." John 19:16: "So he then delivered Him to them to be crucified." Crucified Matthew 27:33-35: "And when they had come to a place called Golgotha....they had crucified Him..." Mark 15:25: "And it was the third hour [9 a.m.] when they crucified him." Luke 23:33: "And when they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified Him..." John 19:17: "They took Jesus...to the place called the Skull..." Death of Jesus Matthew 27:45-46: "Now from the sixth hour [noon] darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour [3 p.m.]. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice..." Mark 15:33,37: "And when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. ... And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last." Luke 23:44-46: "And it was about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour... And Jesus crying out with a loud voice...He breathed His last." Burial Matthew 27:57-60: "And when it was evening...Joseph took the body... and laid it in his own new tomb..." Mark 15:42-46: "And when evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath... Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down,... and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock..." Luke 23:50-54: "...and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. And it was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin." John 19:31-42: "Therefore, on account of the Jewish day of preparation, because the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there." [The 'High Sabbath' of v. 31 is referred to in Piske Tosefot Shabbat as 'Shabbat HaGadol' (The Great or High Sabbath), and speaks of the Sabbath that falls within the Week of Passover.] Dead for three days and three nights Resurrection: Sunrise Matthew 28:1-6: "Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week..." Mark 16:1-6: "And it was very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen...." Luke 24:1-6: "But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb..." John 20:1-14: "Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark..." |

Yeah but the Wednesday thing doesn't really wash because we read in both Mark 15:42, Luke 23:52-56 and John 19:31 that the sabbath was the following day (after the cruxifiction).
Therefore the Jews wanted to take the bodies down before the sabbath (which was that evening). The women prepared spices for his body, but because the sabbath drew on, they were unable to ever use them and instead rested. Then on Sunday they returned with the spices to finish the job. Mark 16:1 & Luke 24:1 Again, the phrase three days & three nights is not a literal 72 hour period, but a figure of speech referring to any part of three days and nights. In the book of Esther 4:16, although it says they fasted for three days, night and day, between the time they started and the time she appeared before the king "on the third day" would not have been 72 hours. If they started their fast on Friday, the third day would have been Sunday. So you're back to ANY part of three days. Again, rememeber that Jesus rarely spoke in literal terms. That's something to really consider when you think about it. He used terminology/slang that the people of his day used and were familiar with. Like it being easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. The eye of a needle was a narrow street where merchants unloaded goods and stuff. It was difficult to get through, and the people in that day and age knew exactly what he meant and that it wasn't a literal needle that everyone today thinks it is. So things like that make you realize he could have easily been talking about any part of the three days & nights and rising ON the third day. If that was a common figure of speech as it seems to be, it makes the most sense. |
