Two sons. Which are you?

Have you ever made a promise to God that you would live according to God's standards and not your own? Have you kept that promise?

As you read the following parable, think about which of these sons might apply more to your life. What does God want of you today?

quote:

Matthew 21:28-32 (NIV)

[Jesus told this parable:]

"What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.'

"'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

"Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go.

"Which of the two did what his father wanted?"

"The first," they answered.

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him."

God's will for us is always better than our own even when we don't understand His master plan. I have been both of those children in the parable. Recently I realized that I had been the scribe that went to pray and justified himself before God. Now I chose by His grace to be the publican, who simply said God forgive me a sinner.

I've made promises to God more times than I can remember, and I've almost never failed to fail.

It is now my understanding that God knows me and my needs much better than I ever will, and that there is really no need for empty promises and sweet nothings.

I'm hoping I'm the first son in the parable, although life is not that black and white. I suppose we all assume both roles at different points in life.

I'll be honest. I try NOT to make promises, to God or anyone else, unless I am certian I can do it. I don't bargin with God, such as heal so and so and I'll serve you in the mission fields or such. I just ask outright to have the healing for so and so, if it is God's will. Sometimes, he has done so, sometimes, he hasn't. I just don't think making promises to God is something we should do.

I have however, promised God I would do my best to serve him as I should. I try to live up to that, but it's not easy. I do my best and have to hope and pray that my best is good enough.
