For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.On their hands they will bear you up, so you will not dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. Psalm 91:11-13
When I was about two years old, we were invited to a friend's house to swim. I was told to sit I could sit on the top step, but not to go any further than that. I was content with this until I saw an older boy moving his way around the pool holding onto the gutter. It occurred to me that there was no reason why I could not do this, too. It did not enter my mind that I did not know how to swim. I remember grabbing for the gutter, missing it, and floating peacefully down in the water. The last thing I remember before the blackness overtook me was seeing someone swimming toward me. I wonder how many near-death experiences we all have that we never know about. That is what comes into my mind as I read these verses. Most people can name a few times in their lives where they have been in mortal danger, but we are blissfully unaware of the times where death has brushed by us unbeknownst to us. Even when we have been most vulnerable or most foolish, the Lord has been our Protection. That is the faithfulness of God in action; His constant protection of us even in our oblivion. It was by my curiosity and ignorance that I almost drowned as a child. It was because of God's protection that I was saved.
