Dogs have surrounded Me; a band of evil men has encircled Me, they have pierced My Hands and My Feet. I can count all My Bones; people stare and gloat over Me. They divide My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing. Psalm 22:16-18

According to my NIV Study Bible, Psalm 22 and 69 are the most quoted Psalms in the New Testament. (NIV Study Bible pg 805) It is no wonder; this is a direct reference to Christ generations before His Birth.
I can't remember the exact number, but Jesus had to fulfill some hundreds-odd prophecies to be the Messiah. The odds of doing this border on the impossible. Literally. Some things He was in control of, but many things, like where He was born and being of the House of David, He was not in control of. It was not one of those things where a man could wake up one sunny morning and say, "I think I will be the Messiah." Many men tried that and failed by the simple fact that they were NOT the Messiah. While I was writing this, it came to my mind that even if a person was faking being the Messiah, certainly they would have run the other way when one of the LAST prophecies was fulfilled; "They have pierced My Hands and My Feet." Living in Roman times Jesus likely knew about the agony of crucifixion. This is one thing that totally impresses my wife who is not quite yet a believer; when the Al Quaida send young people out on suicide missions that they, themselves are obviously not brave enough to participate in, and when these leaders run and hide instead of backing up their brave words publicly, my wife always brings up Jesus Who did not run. He said what He had to say and stayed availible.
Prophecies are part of the great puzzle of the future. They are the first witnesses to what will be. When the parts of this puzzle are put together, we see the Face of Jesus Christ.
