There were shephards living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you Good News of Great Joy that will be for all the people." Luke 2:8-10
I am constantly amazed that the God of Heaven, the Omnipotence of the Universe wants to have anything to do with humanity at all; we sin against Him and each other. We start wars, and if we are not involved in a country-wide war, start personal wars in our churches and homes. Yet God DOES choose to communicate with us. He refuses to cut humanity off. He refuses to give up on us. Each person is precious in His Sight. You would expect, at the birth of a King, that only the "important" people would be invited. Other Kings, people with political power and clout. I would expect, if I had not already read the Bible, to see a list of the names of those on the Roman Senate, and the most upstanding members of the Jewish Temple. But those people were not on the invite list. Instead, God sent an angel to proclaim to some simple shephards in the fields the birth of Jesus. What is God saying in this unique invite? Well, as pointed out earlier, this angel could have shown up at the Temple or the Roman Senate. It would not have been that difficult. Instead, the angel went to the plain folk to give them the honor first. The plain folk, like us. I watch "American Idol". There are alot of plain folk there with average to hideous voices. Yet if God were sitting on the judge's panel (And He is the only One with a RIGHT to judge!) it would be the people we do not expect getting those gold tickets to Hollywood. Which brings up you; you, who do not think you have enough talent or creativity to do anything for the Lord. You, who feel alone and ordinary. You who feel you have nothing to offer of value to anyone, much less God. Which judge are you listening to? Is it God? Because you are a quiet accountant, or a nurse's aide, or a fast-food worker, does that make you any less important to the Lord? Do you need an advanced college degree to matter? Do you need money or status? Look again, you who are precious to the Lord; it was the "plain" people God most valued in giving the honor of seeing the newborn Messiah. Take that 2,000 years into the future to know that God values you as you are. You have a "name" in His Kingdom. You are invited to come before the Lord and worship Him. You mean that much to Him.
