When words are many sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. Proverbs 10:19

A tiny cigarette butt thrown carelessly from a car window can ignite a forest fire that destroys forests and homes. Gossip can do the same thing. While people at this time are very concerned about what they percieve to be dwindling morals in the church, they do not seem to be doing anything about the rampant gossip within their own walls. I confess to you that I have been part of the problem; I have not perfected yet the ability to confront people on something that is bothering me, so I talk to others about it. Yet I also know that once something is out of my mouth, it is impossible to get it back.
Once, back in High School, I was out in front of the school gossiping with a friend. Somehow, the conversation turned to a particular girl who had confided to me that she got clothes at yard sales. I passed this on with relish. I personally had nothing against her; in fact, I liked her, but this little tidbit was far too fascinating not to repeat. It made me feel good that I did NOT get my clothes at yard sales. Then I happened to turn, and there standing right behind me was the subject of my gossip. I have never forgotten the hurt in her eyes at my betrayal. There was absolutely nothing I could say. Now, what would happen if EVERYONE could hear what I said about them? Would I speak differently about them? Definatley.
Let's watch our words. If we are given a juicy bit of gossip, lets not pass it on. If it REALLY is that important, tell God about it. I guarentee you He won't repeat it. If there is gossip and rumors around our church, let's not dishonor God by being a part of it. Let's also not bring gossip to prayer group disguised as a "prayer request". Out in our daily lives, let us keep apart from the office gossip. Let's honor God with our speech in every part of our lives.
