Prolong the life of the king; may his years endure to all generations! May he be enthroned forever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him! Psalm 61:6-7
Everyone needs God. There is a worldly belief that we can take care of ourselves; that we SHOULD take care of ourselves. This is reflected by the saying, "God helps those who help themseves". Someone who wants to know where this verse is in the Bible will not find it; it is simply not there. "God helps those who ask for it" is more biblically accurate. The times I have felt the most empty in my life were the times I felt that God was gone...that somehow, I was rejected by Him. It was the emptiest I ever felt. My soul felt like it was consigned to the deepest dungeon of hell, literally. It was the faithfulness, the forgiveness and the steadfast love of the Lord that restored me to wholeness. I could not do it myself. I know this because I tried. I only wound myself deeper into my personal torment. Even King David, by our standards rich and honored, needed God to strengthen him. He needed God to forgive him after his murder of Uriah, and his adulteries with Uriah's wife, Bathsheeba. We cannot do it on our own. Some have the propensity to "be good" and do everything right, yet they still need God. Others, like myself, and the young lady who hurled herself from a building, know the pain of spiritual bankruptcy, yet if a King knows his need for God, shall we think any less? Because so many diseases can be healed by medicine? Because some "demons" were found to be mental illnesses of a chemical sort and can now be treated by means other than chaining them to the local tombs? Whether times are good, or times are bad, one thing does not change; our need for God.
